Cameron Speech On Redistributing Power A “Knee Jerk” Reaction
PROSPECTIVE Independent MP David Kirwan today (May 26) welcomed David Cameron’s pledge to redistribute power if he wins power at the next election.
However, the candidate for Wirral West went on to claim that the Tory leader’s speech could have been made years ago rather than in the wake of the MPs’ Expenses Scandal.
David said: “I believe passionately in the importance of local democracy and the need to genuinely represent the views of local people rather than merely paying lip service to them.
“That is why I today broadly welcome David Cameron’s ideas to redistribute power away from Westminster.
“However, you cannot get away from the fact that today’s announcement is a knee-jerk reaction to the huge wave of disgust he and other Members of Parliament have been subjected to in the wake of the Expenses Scandal.
“As ever, while some of Mr Cameron’s proposals are sound, others are pure gimmicks with very little substance. There is also the question of whether today’s proposed reforms ever make it into a Conservative Party manifesto.
“It is one thing to talk about reducing the power of No 10 Downing Street, quite another to make it a reality. Since when did turkeys vote for Christmas?”
