Why we need a different kind of Human Rights Act
Prospective Independent MP David Kirwan has called for a different kind of Human Rights Act - one that protects the British public from greedy banks and corporations.
David, who will stand in Wirral West constituency at the General Election, said: “The Conservatives claim that if elected they will revoke the Human Rights Act 1998. I believe that they have got the wrong end of the stick.
“Last week the Supreme Court dashed the hopes of justice for thousands of Bank customers who claim that they were overcharged on their overdrafts. The greedy Banks bailed out by public money continue to prosper and it is rumoured that they will now use this licence to print money by extending charges to the hitherto free cash withdrawal service at the hole in the wall.
“Week in and week out we hear reports of the great Utilities such as the Electric, Gas and Water companies posting ever increasing profits which they claim they must retain in order to invest in new technology. Yet these same companies announce swingeing rises for the essential services that none of us can afford not to use lest we freeze or die of thirst.
“Not a thought is given to the pensioners and those on low income when British Gas for example has increased its prices fourfold in eighteen months with further rises contemplated in the pipeline.
“Super tankers over laden with millions of tons of crude oil lie at anchor off our coasts. Why do they not dock and unload their cargoes? The simple answer is that the greedy oil companies are simply waiting for the price of crude oil to rise yet further. Withholding these supplies serves their present purpose in maintaining the abnormally high price of fuel at the garage pumps.
“What we need is a Human Rights Act that champions the rights of the individual and protects us from the greed of the Banks and great Corporations and to ensure a fair deal for all.”
