Hoon And Hewitt Highlight Need For Independent MPs In Parliament

The failed coup led by former Cabinet Ministers Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt highlights yet again the need for more Independent MPs in Parliament.

Prospective Independent MP for Wirral West David Kirwan said that while the Labour Party continued to obsess about their leadership, the country was crying out for serious politicians only interested in the needs of the voters who put them there in the first place.

David said: “I am sure I am not the only person who watched this damp squib of a plot unfold who thought how utterly pathetic they all sounded navel gazing about whether Gordon Brown was the right man for the job.

“This at a time when our economy continues to be one of the worst in Europe, our soldiers are risking their lives in faraway countries and the worst snow in 30 years has brought our country to a virtual standstill. We don’t even seem to be able to grit our roads and pavements properly.

“The Tories are no better. One moment they are promising married couples’ tax breaks, while the next moment they are backtracking and promising nothing of the sort.

“The simple truth is that this country needs a General Election. We should have been given one when Brown succeeded Blair, we should have had one when the Expenses Scandal broke and we certainly need one now.

“Staggering on until May 6 as many commentators predict may suit Mr Brown and his shambles of a Government, but as far as the hard working people of this country are concerned it is merely another four wasted months when a new breed of Independent MPs could be helping to change the way we are governed.”
